Multi Classic 12 in. x 12 in. Gauged Slate Floor and Wall Tile (5 sq. ft. / case) - Product information

The MSI Multi Classic 12 in. x 12 in. Slate Floor and Wall Tile features distinct shades and tones creating a varied pattern for a rustic appeal and low sheen finish to complement any interior setting. Ideal for wall, floor or countertop tiling schemes, this tile offers a skid-resistant design suitable for heavy-duty residential or commercial flooring in high-traffic areas, such as hallways, shopping malls and commercial kitchens. Use matching trim tile or a combination of field tile for the design that best suits your space and preferences. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

slate tile
Bought slate tile since wanted a quality looking entrance floor. Had to buy/look through many boxes too find enough good tiles, sizes differ, thickness's differ. Part of a slate tile floor is the differences.
I used 511 sealer enhancer before I even started installing and glad I did. By sealing it before install I had an easier time removing mortar and grout. 511 does not have a noxious smell too it & you can get it at Menards. After install I did one more coat and the floor really popped.
Install was difficult and time consuming. Used Natural Stone & Tile mortar and had to make sure it was thick to support tile. Differences in thickness's had me using less/more mortar as needed and it was well worth it. I had a unusual floor install since the main floor was bad and I had to rebuild it and use more mortar to compensate and could not use a floor trowel.
Slate tiles are very labor intense and time consuming. Take your time and the end result will wow you.

Good end result. Lots of variance. LOTS of broken tiles in the box.
I've done several other jobs with slate and I have to say that this is the most inconsistent tile I've ever used. Period. Some pieces are so thin they can't be used, some are so thick they almost can', either... I strongly recommend opening and sorting EVERYTHING before you start -- I had about 25% breakage from the store, so was almost short the minute I brought it to the job. Sort and return anything broken BEFORE you get going, so you don't have to walk away from your job to go back to the store to swap for better pieces. I also had to trim a few pieces square, but not many, or much. Finally, the extreme variation in thickness means a LOT of buttering to keep things straight and level -- HOWEVER, once this tile is down and sealed, it does look GREAT! Lots of good deep color strains and good texture on the surface. For the price, you really can't beat this tile. DEFINITELY seal before you grout. I also recommend using a good crack prevention mortar and epoxy grout.

Love this tile!
I just finished installing 300 sq feet of this tile and it looks great. I love the variety of colors and textures of this slate tile. That being said it is helpful to work out of a few boxes at a time to keep an even texture and color variety going on your floor. The tiles are very soft and easy to cut. Make sure you seal them with a penetrating sealer before you go to grout or you will have a heck of a tile trying to clean off your excess grout. Slate is defiantly requires more labor than installing ceramic tile, but the outcome is beyond worth it. I installed this tile in our cabin and look forward to installing it in our home someday. I experienced very little breakage, but be prepared to have a few pieces flake off the tops and bottoms of these tiles!

It's worth the extra work
This tile is the least expensive stone tile available at $1.25 / ft. so I really can't complain about the extra work required to set this stuff. Be prepared to fight with different thickness and sizes. Yes some do need to be squared. trimed and pulled off to get level, but the finished product is worth it if you take the time to work with the stone. I had a really hard time getting grout haze off even though I sealed with mirra seal & enhance first. After I cleaned it (several cycles) I resealed with mirra matte and finally got it right. Wish I had sealed with mirra matte first. Warning! this stuff has powerful vapors so maybe seal outside before setting. Vast improvement over the cheap firewall I had before

not durable at all
very pretty tile and extremwely affordable; however, you get what you pay for. Several pieces are busted in every case which should be the first sign. We have already replaced over dozen that were laid and now we have to replace another dozen within the first 2 years which is a royal pain. If you drop anything on the floor, the tile will break.

Sharp edges on the top face. Slate is always a toe stubber but this slate actually had ridges which could poke or slice your foot in the center of the tile. Maybe good decoration around a fireplace but not good for a floor ever.
